$35 million: An opulent 1920s mansion on Winnetka's lakefront, lavishly restored and perched above more than 220 feet of private beach, went on the market Aug. 9 at the highest asking price for any Chicago-area property. Owned by Muneer Satter, a former Goldman Sachs partner who now runs his own private investment firm, and his wife, Kristen Hertel, the 22-room home on 2.3 acres is about half a mile north on Sheridan Road from the giant, $78 million Justin Ishbia estate.
$18 million: This 20-room Winnetka mansion listed on a private, agents-only network in late August was built in 2005 on about 1.3 acres, with about 100 feet of rocky Lake Michigan shoreline. Set off from Sheridan Road behind iron gates, the house has four living levels, and on the lakefront side are a pool, outdoor kitchen and terraces, both on the table land and on terraces stepping down the bluff.
$15 million: One of the grandest estates in Lake Forest, a sumptuous mansion that has been home to three different super-wealthy clans in its 12 decades and surrounded by acres of lavish gardens by its most recent owner, went up for sale Aug. 15. Built in 1905 by Benjamin Marshall, architect of Chicago's Blackstone and Drake hotels, it was first the home of John T. Pirie Jr., second-generation leader of the Carson Pirie Scott & Co. department store, and his wife, Sophie.
$11.9 million: A blufftop mansion in Lake Forest built four years ago with a rare amenity for the North Shore, a beach house down by the Lake Michigan shoreline, went up for sale in mid-August. Tom Fuller, the former owner of a metal and plastic parts firm who had a second career as a rock 'n' roll musician, built the house on roughly 11,400 square feet on about 2.1 acres on Bluffs Edge Drive. A funicular, or miniature hillside rail line that seats four adults, runs down the bluff to the sandy beach.
$11.75 million: A retired top executive at United Airlines is selling the lakefront mansion he and his wife built in Winnetka. The 12,700-square-foot house on Sheridan Road has a Cape Cod-inspired exterior wrapped in gray shingles and was completed in 2021. Mike Bonds, who retired in 2017 as United's executive vice president of human resources and labor relations, and his wife, Cynthia Bonds, put the six-bedroom home up for sale May 21.
$11.7 million: A penthouse unit spanning the entire 64th floor of Park Tower on North Michigan Avenue hit the market in mid-July at a price that would make it Chicago's most expensive condo sale of the year, if it sells for that price. The 8,500-square-foot Streeterville home is owned by David and Larisa Kronfeld, the former being the founder and chairman of longtime Chicago venture-capital firm JK&B Capital. The space is about 8,500 square feet, spans 15 rooms, includes an in-home gym and offers 360-degree views of the cityscape.
$11 million: This Gold Coast penthouse owned by Ken Griffin at No. 9 Walton, depicted in rendered shots above, has a private rooftop pool accessible by an in-unit private elevator. The 7,500-square-foot home went on the market in mid-July and has 16-foot windows and two additional terraces providing 360-degree views of the city, among other luxury building amenities such as a golf simulator and two-story exercise facility, according to the listing.
$10.8 million: Retired Fortune Brands Chairman and CEO Bruce Carbonari and his wife, Kate Carbonari, put this Gold Coast penthouse condo up for sale July 15. The condo is about 5,400 square feet with another roughly 1,700 feet of outdoor space on the 23rd floor. The glassy contemporary building at Elm and State streets, designed by Chicago architecture firm SCB, was not yet complete when the Carbonaris paid almost $6.7 million for the full floor of raw space in June 2016.
